Product Description
The complete guide to buying and using telescopes for stargazers of any age and experience level.
Buying a telescope is crucial for budding astronomers. With so many choices, how does the beginner choose? Robin Scagell supplies expert, objective advice.
Stargazing with a Telescope is a practical guide that demystifies the process of buying and using a telescope. Scagell provides brand names and model numbers and general advice that applies to all brands, not just those covered. Clear color diagrams and non-scientific text explain lens size, focal lengths, focal ratios and much more.
Equipment covered includes:
- Binoculars -- a range of choices for astronomers at any level
- Refractors -- classic telescopes that are easy to use and maintain
- Reflectors -- sophisticated instruments that allow night-sky photography
- Catadioptrics -- compact telescopes that are gaining popularity.
Scagell also covers suitable accessories, such as eyepieces, filters, mounts and supports, and photography through a telescope. He provides useful tips on setting up and using any telescope and reviews objects to observe with different sizes of telescopes.
There is also valuable advice on how to instantly spot misleading labels on low-end telescopes. These are often bought for young astronomers who quickly become discouraged by the telescope's poor performance.
Stargazing with a Telescope is a must for newcomers to astronomy whatever their age.

I bought this for my star gazing hubby. He liked it so well it is dog eared now!
In a telescope where you can change the magnification it is a reflecting telescope and the eyepiece goes in the side. What you are actually doing is using a small telescope to look at a small part of the captured image and enlarge it for your eye – you are not changing the light capturing ability or enlargement of the over all telescope.
In a refracting telescope with the viewing on the end through lenses, you are using lenses the same way the camera does – adjusting the focal length and viewing the result.

Be sure to read the answers given in those links the first answerer gave you. There are some very excellent replies to those questions, and the last thing you want to do is spend money on your hobby by getting a piece of equipment that you won't use, or is just "junk."
As far as your brand name question goes, there are quite a few trustworthy names. Personally, I like Celestron and Orion, but more knowledgeable people onthis matter will have better answers.
My suggestion would be to find your local astronomy club, attned a few star parties, look through other people's scopes, listen to what they have to say, and then, decide which type of scope is best for you.

No video that includes the phrase “I mean…” in its narration is worth watching.
we just happen to get our daughter her first one this past Christmas and the one we got would be perfect for him it is a Bushnell 150 power Astro/Terrestrial Telescope with Tripod It is super easy to use and it does not have all the weird gadgets to go on it we all love it and my 4 year old already takes it out to the back yard and looks through it all by herself. try looking on ebay for one thats where we got ours and with shipping it was less than 30$.
Starlight zipline: Could this be classified as "extreme stargazing"?
By Markham Park in that general area there are very few lights and it is not that congested. I live in Davie, and I go there almost every weekend. Hope I could help!
Stargazing with Melissa and Rachel at 3 to 4 in the morning. Saw five shooting stars! Breathtaking.
A terrestrial telescope is one that you use for looking at earthbound objects and people often call them spotting scopes. Star away from the wallmart versions and try something like celestron, bausch and lomb or swift
Pretty much any place somewhat close to Toronto is pretty bad, but if there was any place that I could think of it would be out at Ninth Line and Dundas (Mississauga-Oakville border).
Did you know the Hubble Space Telescope was sent into orbit 20 years ago in 1990!? See HUBBLE 3D in IMAX theaters 3/19!
They’re didgeridoos. I think, traditionally, the didgeridoo is played as a way of mimicking wildlife. They’re really cool instruments anyway.
spacearcade 6" and 8" #Dobsonian #Telescope on a very reasonable price. http://www.gnomonastrotech.in
Get a hold of Sky and Telescope magazine or even Astronomy mgazine for ideas and pricing.
With $400 you can get a good 4" reflector with money left over for filters and accessories. But the only way you will truly learn about the telescopes is doing your homework on them.
Some camara shops also deal in telescopes. Do a yellow page search. Stay away from Wal-Mart and the likes.

RT Stunning image of the Orion nebula from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope #space
Right now. Let's say it's summer for you right this second. Then, it's warm when you go out. Now let's say it's winter for you. Then it gets dark early, and stays dark longer.
I personally like the Autumn. That's when it's still reasonably warm, and it gets dark enough early enough to show little kids who go to sleep early.
For $500, you've got enough for visual astronomy. You can get the Orion xt6i for $400. You can get the Orion xt8i for $530. In either case you get a rock solid stable mount, a scope that is easily portable and fits in your car, great optics, and a computer that helps you find things. Figure looking at 10 objects an hour, instead of 2 or 3 without a computer. The computer uses a standard 9 volt battery that lasts months of heavy use. That's because you push the scope around, the computer just figures out where you've pushed it. Set up time, including 2 star alignment, is about 3 minutes. Of course 8 inches is better than 6 inches. In particular, you can use an oxygen 3 filter, which gives you nebulae from high light pollution areas. For galaxies, you'll still need dark skies.
Some will say that you should get the 10" classic for $500. You have to be into the thrill of the hunt. That's OK. But know that you can't buy it and add the computer later. The mount for the xt10 isn't set up to take the encoders that detect motion. You can buy a $1300 EQ mount or $1500 EQ mount with computer later, however.
Orion has excellent after sales support. I bought my xt10i via a link like these. But you should know that i joined a local astronomy club, and hung out for five years before buying it. That's how i knew it was worthwhile, and what i'd want.
