RT #STILLERSTRONG eBAY AUCTIONS for Haiti: from Conan, Pee-wee, Tom Cruise + LA Lakers… …RT!
A reader got in touch with me with observations regarding the recent article on the new Propworx auctions (see Propworx Launches Stargate eBay Auctions, Website; Announces Live Auction Events), making note of the initial items sold (most for $0.99) with positive feedback and related remarks left for the “propworx2″ seller account for those eBay transactions. The Hubble telescope has detected the end of an era in the dwarf galaxy NGC 2976.The galaxy is quieting down after eons of furious star creation, with just a few stars in the galaxy’s central core continuing to form. Located just twelve million lightyears away in the M81 group, NGC 2976 should still be going strong when it comes to star formation. A dwarf galaxy, NGC 2976 probably interacted with bigger galaxies around 500 million years ago. This greatly disrupted the concentration of gases in the galaxy, forcing some of it out of the galaxy and the rest inwards to the core. This left the outer regions of NGC 2976 depleted, but it fueled raucous star creation in the interior that will last for about a billion years. Hubble has managed to capture the galaxy about halfway through this process, although already the activity is starting to wind down, with only the innermost region of the galaxy still conducive to star creation. Only a 2,500 light year radius around the core still…

I'll wager that you don't mean the sun. So the nearest star although of less than perfect magnitude is Alpha Centuri. Best viewed from the southern hemisphere. A decent telescope with 200 power will do just fine. You can go to Space.com for futher information. You might have to register with them and ask in their discussion group to point out the nearest star viewed from the northern hemsphere.
Note: it will still view as a dot. No visible disk shape or other. Just a white dot.

Selling on eBay is not as easy as some portray. In fact, go to eBay and check out the number of auctions that end without a single bid. Competition is getting tough, as more sellers go to eBay; even the big boys are joining in the eBay marketplace. Add to that the increasing listing and final value fees.
eBay has several ways for you to determine exactly what the hot items to sell on their marketplace:
Items In Demand = the most popular items currently within that particular category. To see the In Demand page, go to
Hot Items by Category Report = a monthly report that lists the fastest growing categories on eBay for the previous month. Go to and select "Hot Items by Category" from the menu on the left.
eBay Pulse = "a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay". Go to to see eBay Pulse in action.
Merchandising Calendar = eBay promotes specific categories on its home page each month. Savvy eBayers know that this home page exposure results in more interest in such categories. Go to to view the current Merchandising Calendar.

Yes, any page that can contain links or ads can have malicious links in them, unless the provider, (eBay), specifically blocks them.

Geoff has given you a few good suggestions. I would add that there is no ideal scope and that your best choice will depend upon your budget, conditions, objectives, and preferences. The cost of a good balanced telescope will be about 1/3 optical tube, 1/3 mounting system, and 1/3 eyepieces and accessories. It is counter productive to become overly fixated on just one piece of the system.
While the dobs and the newtonian have alot to offer, They are not the only choice out there. it would be well worth the investment for the members of your club to visit a few star parties, to gain first hand experience with some of the equipment.
If you can give us some idea of what your club would like to do, and the resources available to you, we will be able to give a far better response to your question.

I think overall the SkyQuest XT6 will be a much better choice. You will be able to use it on the ground vs a tabletop. It will be easier to collimate and keep collimated. It should perform better on the Moon and planets because of this AND because f/8 vs f/5 is much more forgiving of eyepiece aberrations.
Plus, and this is a big plus — it is easier to manufacture a good quality mirror at f/8 than at f/5 which means that you are less likely to get a lemon with the longer focal ratio.
The only real advantage of the StarBlast is that it is a little more portable. But the SkyQuest isn't that heavy either.
Very beautifully done. Thank you KonicaMinolta for creating and sharing this.
well, andale has alot of good things to read, as they have many ideas as to which category works best for the certain product, what was the higest and lowest selling price for a certain item, whats the average price for that certain product…..as i have seen…having a reserve lowers my bids….and if i start with 99 cents or a penny..i get bids right up to nearly or over average market value..the thing is..i cant lose money on it because i do it full time…i have tried posting in 2 categories and stuff…sometimes things like that help…sometimes it doesnt…it costs more..i know that for sure….so..to counter, i try to get a buyer….so if i want to sell for 100..and it costs me 2buxx….if i reserve it for 200..and if its the same price..i keep going..till the price changes..then i lower it so that it is still 2 buxx…and i do second chance offers alot……but…that way is a bit crude…sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it doesnt..because not everybody buys on a second chance..they were merely trying to pass the reserve…i check market prices before i buy something to sell…pictures are everything….always get good pics…thats a first….then…always accept all types of payments….if i have 100 products to sell..i sell 50 a week..instead of 98 in one week and 2 in the other…that way…i can keep people visiting my store….thats definately going to boost your bids….the good thing is..with price finder,..you can post buy it now auctions…if the most frequent price is 99 buxx…just post it for 99 buxx buy it now..or something like that..u dont get more..but u get market..which you wouldnt buy to resell if its 99 bux or more….
I love this =DD

Congratulations on building your scope. That is quite a nice accomplishment, If you mean the box down by the mirror? Sure, as long as it is convenient for you. BTW one of the very popular finders is the Telrad. You can attach it with double side tape that comes with it and it never will get unstuck. You dont have to worry about drilling a hole in the tube.
Depends on a lot of factors such as what is your primary interest such as solar system objects like planets, moon, sun, etc or deep space objects such as galaxies, nebula etc. Also depends on how dark your local sky is and also whether you plan to travel to remote dark sites to observe.
A small refractor in the 80 to 100mm range would be a good starter scope. Also you may consider a dobsonian reflector which provides more aperture relative to price. Orion, Meade and Vixen all make good inexpensive refractors in the 90mm range that cost under $400 including equatorial mount. An 8" dobsonian reflector from Orion would run about $300.
The refractor will give sharper images but the dobsonian will cost a bit less and pick up fainter objects. With a 90mm refractor you should be able to make out some bands on Jupiter and see several moons as they orbit Jupiter. Also you should be able to see the rings of Saturn. The views won't be super spectacular like you see in magazines but still very nice for a true enthusiast. The 8 inch Dobsonian will show you even more detail but this type of mount is more difficult to use while tracking objects as they move across the sky.
Stay away from brands like Tasco and Jason etc sold at department stores. They advertise things like 600X magnification but that is nothing but sales hype. You will be quickly disappointed and selling the scope for much less on Ebay. The more important measure of a scope is aperture and optical quality. Aperture is the diameter of the primary mirror or lens. The larger the aperture the more light it will gather and therefore more detail will be visible assuming the optics are decent quality.
For under $300, I would get an Orion 8 inch dobsonian reflector. For $500 I would get the Orion Astroview 120ST or a ten inch dobsonian. For less than $200 I would not even waste it on a cheap scope. I would instead get a decent pair of binoculars for around $100, which is surprisingly good for stargazing, comet watching, DSO spotting plus much more portable and fun to use than any 60mm scope on a flimsy alt-azimuth mount.
