These are not common photography terms. Rather, they are optical terms. A converging lens receives parallel light waves and refracts them to a focal point. A diverging lens disperses them.

Actually, Melanie, my camera is a right, not a privilege. And what is it that I am “taking” from someone, exactly, that the banks and stores are not? I don’t care if people “feel safer” – other people’s delusions are not my problem. But as Marty said, mine wasn’t a statement about courtesy – I never photograph people without their consent – it’s a statement about my absolute right to do so if I wish – and also a musing about parental stupidity (or perhaps extremely selective paranoia).
