What’s a good beginner telescope?

I'm thinking of buying a telescope, but since I do not know a lot about them, I'm not quite sure where to start. Do you know any good websites or refrences where I can learn about telescopes, lenses and magnification? I want to be able to accurately compare different telescopes in order to determine which one is best.
